“Never underestimate the power of being a woman, never underestimate the power of being a Zeta and never be surprised when greatness is expected of you.” – Deb Ensor

Inspired by this mantra of our late Executive Director Deb Ensor, the members of National Council have chosen a theme for the 2014-2016 biennium to give members and chapters a distinct challenge—GREATNESS.

Achieving greatness is not fast or easy. It takes determination, collaboration, problem solving and real effort. ZTA’s mission states that we aim “To make a difference in the lives of our members by developing the potential of each individual.” We seek to tap the inner greatness in each sister, thereby making our chapters and communities great in the process.

To help ZTA rise to this challenge, in this academic year, we will encourage you to Strive for Greatness—to use your effort, time and talent to work harder and push yourself and ZTA further. Striving for greatness means keeping your sights set on continually becoming even better women, Zetas and chapters.

Next academic year, we will ask you to Inspire Greatness—to share your enthusiasm, passion and success to encourage greatness in your sisters, chapters and communities. Inspiring greatness means leading by example, upholding ZTA’s core values and, in doing so, reminding others that striving for greatness can mean taking small steps to work toward a bigger picture.

NLC 2015 logo Throughout the biennium, the message of Greatness will be woven into many ZTA materials and events. You will see it on social media and the communications you receive. In the next issue of Themis, you will find stories about how our members and chapters already strive for greatness. If you attend National Leadership Conference this summer, you will dive deep into what it means to Strive for Greatness, and attendees at the 2016 Convention will attend sessions to learn how to Inspire Greatness.

By putting this challenge—Greatness—front and center, we hope members will be moved to work together as individuals and as an organization to strive for one common goal. Are you up to the challenge? Greatness is expected of you.

Looking Forward to a Great NLC
While the biennium has already begun, we will dive deeper into the greatness theme at National Leadership Conference this summer. NLC attendees will hear more about how to Strive for Greatness and will be asked to share the lessons with their chapters. You can apply the G-R-E-A-T acronym to everyday situations. Why not start raising the bar now?

Grow Grow
As a leader, continually develop yourself and your skills. Learn more about what you bring to a group to positively contribute to the team.
Reality Reality
In a given situation (or even your ZTA chapter), look at your areas of strength, weakness, opportunity and threat. Ask: What is the problem? Dig deeper to identify the root issue that needs solving or improving.
Explore Explore
Instead of jumping straight from the problem to the solution, take time to think creatively and brainstorm possible solutions. Think outside of the box and push yourself to discover new ideas. Utilize the minds of others and collaborate for the best results.
Answer Answer
Assess your list of possible ideas to select the best out of the ideas you generated. Look at ways to organize and evaluate your ideas and examine potential positive and negative consequences to select the ideas that will best address your challenge.
Take Action Take Action
The final step is to take action. Prepare by creating goals and an action plan. Follow through with addressing your challenge by rallying support for your ideas and getting the whole chapter on board with the change. Stay committed to action and improvement.

Quotes that Inspired National Council in the Creation of this Theme

“Never underestimate the power of being a woman, never underestimate the power of being a Zeta and never be surprised when greatness is expected of you.” – Deb Ensor
Deb encouraged us to think as individuals and to set lofty goals. Achieving greatness means continually seeking the noblest and setting an example for others.

“It is the nature of man to rise to greatness if greatness is expected of him.” – John Steinbeck
Once we know others are holding us accountable to evolve into a better version of ourselves, it is in our nature to rise to the occasion. This quote reminds us to hold each other to a high standard and to never back down from a challenge, but to face it head-on with our sisters behind us.

“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” – John Maxwell
Think about someone who inspires you. That person is probably a great leader because he or she empowers you to reach your full potential. As Zetas, we want to be this type of leader—the type that encourages and supports others, who knows when to let go of the reigns and who knows when to lend a helping hand.
