EXTENSION
– The Establishment of New Chapters
Extension
is the activity that increases the number of collegiate ZTA
chapters and is the lifeline of the Fraternity. It links the
past with the future and is necessary for the maintenance
of a healthy and balanced national organization. In 1898,
nine young women had a common goal to unite its members in
lifelong friendship and to instill in them a spirit of mutual
love and helpfulness, thus they created our beloved Zeta Tau
Alpha Fraternity. Almost immediately, the Founders fostered
the dream of Fraternity extension and by 1908 founded 11 new
chapters from Virginia to Texas. Today our Fraternity has
235 links in our Chain of Chapters. We strive to continue
our Founder’s original dream of making Zeta Tau Alpha
membership available to women on college campuses across the
country so that they may “Experience ZTA.”

Experience
ZTA
There are currently 145 college campuses that are home to Zeta
Tau Alpha chapters. If you are interested in the possibility
of bringing ZTA to your campus, you are invited to contact the
Extension Committee of the National Panhellenic Conference.
The NPC Extension Committee Chairman notifies all NPC groups
when a College Panhellenic votes to add another NPC sorority
to their current system, thus beginning the extension process.
In the case where there are no NPC groups on a campus, the Extension
Committee is prepared to work, at the invitation of the University,
to create a Panhellenic system. The NPC Extension Committee
will also guide a local sorority that desires to affiliate with
a NPC group. If you have any questions regarding the extension
process, please contact: |

More
information about the Extension process for both collegiate
and alumnae chapters
-
Alumnae Extension – The purpose of an alumnae
organization is to further the interests of Zeta Tau
Alpha locally and internationally through:
-
Promotion of closer bonds among all alumnae in the
locality regardless of collegiate chapter affiliation
-
Cooperation with collegiate chapters
-
Cooperation and assistance in all Fraternity projects
-
Public relations efforts to increase awareness of
ZTA
-
Representation in the Alumnae Panhellenic
-
Education of alumnae members about all aspects of
the Fraternity, Panhellenic and the Fraternity world
Alumnae
extension is the responsibility of the District President.
She provides assistance and guidance to alumnae in her district
by building interest among area members and by planning
the beginning organization of each new group.
An
alumnae club is formed with four or more interested ZTA
alumnae in a community or geographic area. A chairman is
the only officer necessary at first, but a President and
Secretary-Treasurer are recommended during the organizational
period. As soon as an alumnae club or group of alumnae reaches
a stable membership of 10 or more members in good standing
and passes through a brief organizational stage, it may
apply for chartered status.
-
Collegiate Extension – The Extension Director
is continually looking for desirable campuses on which
to establish new ZTA chapters. Factors that contribute
to such desirability are: favorable administrative attitude
toward Greeks, student-body stability, full accreditation
and acceptable scholastic standards, socially acceptable
campus atmosphere, sufficient number of interested students
to support a ZTA chapter and adequate support from the
ZTA alumnae in the area. ZTA does not expand at the
expense of present collegiate chapters and has a policy
that the reactivation of a chapter takes precedence
over the establishment of a new chapter.
There
are two methods by which new chapters may be established:
-
Absorption
– the pledging of an established club
or local sorority on a prospective campus into
ZTA.
-
Colonization – The recruiting of women interested
in forming a ZTA chapter. At the end of the membership
recruitment period, the women who pledge become
a Zeta Tau Alpha colony. Each group remains a colony
until it has attained the goals established by National
Council. A Director of New Chapters (DNCH) is appointed
by National Council to supervise the development
of the colony and new chapter.
- Installation
– When National Council feels the colony has made
sufficient progress and is ready to accept full responsibility
of being a chartered chapter, plans are made for an Installation
weekend filled with meaningful and inspirational ritual
services, as well as social festivities. The Installation
Banquet is the highlight of the weekend followed by a reception
for the college community. National representatives and
area alumnae gather for the Installation, and a nearby collegiate
chapter assists with the Initiation Service. It is a tradition
of the Fraternity that all Zetas wear turquoise and gray
ribbons under their badges on the day a new collegiate chapter
is installed. Also, all collegiate chapters are expected
to send greetings to the new chapter. New colonies and chapters
are announced in a special mailing and in The LINK newsletter.
- Naming
New Chapters – Upon Installation, the new collegiate
chapter is given a Greek name, denoted alphabetically as
the next link in ZTA’s chain. Alumnae organizations
are named according to their geographic location.
